“XSOLIS not only changes the way we see and think about UM, it increases our awareness of our clinical environment. Any hospital I talk to, I suggest XSOLIS... Period.”

— Renee Dunagan Case Management Supervisor

Partnerships aren’t found, they’re fostered. They don’t just happen overnight, they are nurtured. Although the good ones can be rare, they are transformative. Renee Dunagan, Case Management Supervisor at Citizens Medical Center, knew she needed a partnership she could trust. Her prior experience with a software partner had become an ordeal that was preventing her team
from effectively managing their patients throughout their hospital stay.

Located in the heart of Victoria, Texas, Citizens Medical Center is a 344-bed acute care facility operated as a component unit of Victoria County. Renee’s team, a dyad workforce responsible for both utilization review and discharge planning, was using a standalone care management module that interfaced with their EMR. Customer service with their vendor had been spotty and the lack of support had left her adrift and frustrated. “It was impossible to get anything fixed without engaging upper management,” Renee said. Renee’s current contract was terminating soon and she knew did not want to renew but she needed a better option before just walking away from the current solution. A member of her executive team knew Renee’s frustrations and
introduced her to XSOLIS. After her first demo with the XSOLIS software, Renee was hooked. “I took to XSOLIS like a fish in water,” Renee mused. “Since I started my career in utilization review, [how XSOLIS works is] how my brain functions.

She loved XSOLIS and her contract termination date loomed so she would have to move quickly to prevent a gap in service while moving from the previous vendor to a partnership with XSOLIS. Fortunately, the XSOLIS team found Renee to be a decisive, forwardthinking leader capable of mobilizing her organization and making change happen. Renee quickly engaged her executive team, IT team, and other stakeholders throughout the hospital. Although it was “hard to get everybody on board,” Renee made sure she addressed every concern and made her stance known. “There’s no other software like this,” she repeated early and often.

A key point that Renee used to help unify the team was her message that if we are “able to get the patient right at the front end,” the more we could get it right on status, and the fewer issues I would have on denials.”

“I took to XSOLIS like a fish in water,” Renee mused. “Since I started my career in utilization review, [how XSOLIS works is] how my brain functions.”

After undertaking comprehensive due diligence, her CFO and CMO signed on and got the appropriate wheels turning within the organization.

Set Up for Success

As executive buy-in solidified, Renee worked diligently in the background to ensure her organization was prepped and ready to go once the contract was signed. The XSOLIS implementation went seamlessly since the CMC IT team, “had a good idea of what
they would need to do even before the contract was signed and the [installation] started.” Renee insists that strong IT commitment & case management alignment was a crucial part of the project’s success. Sharing her experience with others, she recommends doing as much work upfront as you can to ensure the process is seamless and moves forward quickly.

By setting expectations upfront and supporting her staff throughout the transition, Renee created an environment where her team now “loves living in [XSOLIS]. XSOLIS was able to help her reach the outcomes she wanted and set her organization up for
future financial success.

A Partnership Built to Last

Renee’s advice for healthcare leaders considering a partnership with XSOLIS? “XSOLIS not only changes the way we see and think about utilization management, it increases our awareness of our clinical environment. Any hospital I talk to, I suggest XSOLIS... Period.”
